The Alliance first met in November 1989. Present were representatives of a number of professions providing services for children, and representatives of the Ministries
of Education, Health, and Community and Social Services.

They shared many concerns, including: the need for more emphasis on health promotion; the need to identify and target "high risk" children; the effects on child development of poverty, unemployment, insufficient affordable housing.

The meeting ended with general agreement on the need for members of different professions, service systems, and government ministries to speak a common language and to work together towards the common goal of improving developmental outcomes for all of Ontario's children, via:

an increased emphasis on health promotion and primary prevention;
the redeployment of existing resources to increase
the effectiveness and efficiency of children's services;

public education and advocacy on behalf of the health and well-being of children and youth.
At the first meeting, 55 people attended. Over the years, the Alliance has grown to a membership of over 200, and has been broadened to include representatives from youth, parent, and volunteer organizations from all over Ontario and beyond, and our Annual Meeting is now attended by close to 100 people.

 Preface
We have prepared this document as a start towards recording the experience of the Sparrow Lake Alliance before too much of our collective memory fades. It is intended to fit with the revised Alliance website www.sparrowlake.org and more detail regarding publications and reports can be found there. As you will see, we have not attempted a detailed year by year account but rather more of a synthesis with examples to convey the overall experience of the Alliance.

Several people have already been generous with assistance on this project, especially Rebecca Haines who organized the archival material for us to review.
