THEME: “Challenges In Healthy Child Development In Today's Complex Communities”

   

This year’s annual meeting brought together presentations and discussion designed to better enable us to develop strategies to support children and families during changing times. As the “knowledge revolution” has moved us rapidly towards a global economy, there has also been key changed in the nature of the family.

In Canada, we are also keenly aware of the potential in and the problems of becoming
an ethnically and culturally diverse society. The aim of the annual meeting was examine some of the results of the growing economic and social inequities being produced.

“Child Development as an Objective of Community Development”
Dr. Clyde Hertzman
Department of Health Care & Epidemiology; Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia; Director of the Program in Population Health, Canadian Institute of Advanced Research

Dr. Hertzman discussed the key community-level variables that shape the environment in which young children grow. His presentation highlighted the levers of change that effect a child’s environment - including biological issues and long-term health outcomes. What follows below is a modified version of the UBC research group’s paper, entitled, “First Report on the Early Development and Community Asset Mapping Project (CAMP)”.
