Goals of the Alliance

Since its inception the goals, structure, and activities of the Sparrow Lake Alliance (SLA) have been directed to ensure the conditions necessary for all Ontario children and youth have the best start possible in life. The Alliance has invested in the belief that promoting healthy development for all children will improve outcomes for children and youth while diminishing for many the need for specialized children's mental health, child welfare, and remedial educational services.

History of the Sparrow Lake Alliance

The Alliance first met in November 1989. Present were representatives of a number of professions providing services for children, and representatives of the Ministries of Education, Health, and Community and Social Services. They shared many concerns, including: the need for more emphasis on health promotion; the need to identify and target "high risk" children; the effects on child development of poverty, unemployment...
